Primary Phase information 

It is imperative that all our students develop the knowledge, skills and understanding in numeracy, in order to prepare them for the next stage of their education and their future lives.

A significant focus on the active teaching of counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, spaces, and measure from the early years onwards is essential.

Mathematics is a key subject in understanding the way the world works and opportunities to change the world, and at King’s Academy Binfield and King’s Academy Oakwood we want students to enjoy Maths and to have the curiosity to experience the power of Mathematics with clear understanding, from 3 - 16. 

Secondary Phase information 

The mathematics curriculum at King's Academy Binfield prioritises teaching in ‘small steps’ – securing the core aspects of KS3 maths early on, and developing pupils’ mathematical confidence – rather than racing through content. Those who are fluent and flexible with core skills and ideas enjoy more depth within topics, and are stretched and challenged with rich tasks that promote higher order thinking and problem-solving.

The work in the classroom is supplemented by regular homework. Hegarty Maths is completed online, and throughout the week we offer intervention support for those that need to develop those core skills.

Year 7 Mathematics

The structure of our year 7 curriculum allows for revision of key stage 2 content. However, we begin the Autumn term with Algebraic Thinking as a ‘fresh start’ for all students who will only have been exposed to a small amount of algebra at KS2. After the October half-term, the emphasis is entirely on numbers for the rest of Autumn and all the spring term.

GCSE Maths

The year 10 & 11 schemes studied cover the whole of the Key Stage 4 curriculum, with Key Stage 3 content as assumed knowledge. However, much of the Key Stage 3 content is revisited as a basis for new material, especially so in the foundation strand.

 At the heart of our English Faculty is a love of reading and writing creatively. We want to inspire and motivate students to ‘DARE’ to be remarkable readers and writers and have designed a curriculum that supports and challenges students. 

Our curriculum:

• is informed by a secure understanding of students’ prior knowledge at KS2
• effectively prepares students for the future
• offers a mixture of reading, writing and speaking & listening opportunities
• makes meaningful links to potential career pathways
• ensures that students have an understanding of key literary time periods and movements
• is designed to include a wide variety of texts: prose/poetry/drama; old/new; male/female; white British/BAME/other cultures
• is built around high quality texts which are also enjoyable to read and study
• exploits opportunities to establish cross -curricular links to deepen understanding
• has challenge for all (regardless of prior attainment) at its heart
• develops confident readers who are able to read, understand, interpret and interrogate information presented to them in a variety of forms and settings
• develops articulate individuals who are able to write skilfully, critically and evaluatively
• promotes creativity, stamina and resilience
• enables teachers to exploit all opportunities to develop students’ cultural capital beyond their existing realm of experience
• provides staff with regular opportunities for professional discussion about subject knowledge and different approaches to teaching English

• Year 7

  In Year 7 we study character, looking at a range of character experiences across key literary time periods. Key units of work include: Autobiography, An Introduction to Poetry, Rhetoric, Chinese Cinderella and Detective Fiction. 

  Year 8

  In Year 8 we study a range of settings whilst developing our understanding of character. Key units of work include: A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Lie Tree and Romantic Poetry, Dystopian Fiction and Short Stories. 

  Year 9

  In Year 9 we study a range of themes as well as progressing our knowledge of character and setting. Key units of study include: Race and Discrimination and Of Mice and Men, Love and Conflict in Romeo and Juliet and other texts and finally the Gothic with a key focus on Rebecca. 

  Year 10

  In Year 10 we follow the AQA English Language and Literature course. Key units of study are: An Inspector Calls, Macbeth, English Language Paper 1 and Poetry (Love and Relationships or Power and Conflict). Students will also undertake their speaking and listening assessment this year when they have to produce a speech on a topic of their choice. It is imperative that students complete this assessment so that they can be entered for the English Language GCSE.

Welcome to the Science Department

A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity; it is therefore essential that our students understand aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, we encourage our students to use the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. 

In the ever-changing and technology reliant world that we live in, this knowledge and skills bank will not only be essential for navigating decision making and new technologies that our students are faced with, but the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) job sector is growing and in need of new talent!

At King’s we aim to teach Science by incorporating as much practical work as possible. We believe that students learn best when they can see, hear and smell the science happening around them! With a focus on “working scientifically” students learn how to plan investigations, analyse data and interpret their results in a way that embeds the practical side of science into the rest of the curriculum.
