King’s Academy Binfield and Oakwood is committed to ensuring that all pupils are able to achieve their full potential, regardless of their home circumstances.
We recognise that, for some young people, life outside of school can bring additional responsibilities that may impact their wellbeing or education. In particular, some students may be helping to care for a family member who has an illness, disability, mental health condition, or addiction. These students are known as young carers.
A young carer is a child or young person under the age of 18 who provides care, assistance, or support to a family member or friend who has:
-
A physical disability
-
A learning disability
-
A long-term illness
-
A mental health condition
-
Substance misuse issues
Caring responsibilities may include:
-
Physical or personal care
-
Emotional support
-
Administering or managing medication
-
Practical household tasks
-
Caring for siblings
We recognise the contributions that young carers make and the challenges they may face. We are committed to identifying and supporting these students to ensure they can thrive socially and academically.
If you believe that your child might qualify as a young carer, have any questions or would like additional information, please contact youngcarers@kingsacademies.uk.
