Welcome to PSHE!

At King’s Academy Binfield and King’s Academy Oakwood, we recognise the importance of the personal development of our students both academically and pastorally. It is our intention to create confident individuals, who have the character and resilience to make positive contributions to the communities they belong to. To this end, we aim to develop students spiritually, morally, socially and culturally while ensuring that they are treated as individuals as well.

We aim to develop students in this way through all aspects of school life; curriculum, extra-curricular activities, the pastoral system, assemblies, as well as themed events.

Our Personal Development provision incorporates both PSHE and SMSC.  We follow the recommendations laid out by the Department for Education and the PSHE Association.  We review and update this each year in line with their guidance as well as key themes prevalent in society.

Topics for all students are grouped into 6 core themes:

  • Rights, Responsibilities and British Values
  • Celebrating Diversity and Equality
  • Relationships, Health and Sex Education
  • Staying Safe, Online and Offline
  • Health and Wellbeing
  • Life Beyond School

Aside from Relationships, Health and Sex Education, these sessions are delivered predominately by form tutors and pastoral leaders as part of our pastoral tutor programme and are relevant to the age, understanding, cultural background and circumstances of the students. They also reflect their needs in terms of language, learning styles and abilities.

Pastoral Days
Every term, we aim to have a single day when all students will be off timetable and will take part in a themed pastoral day.  This will complement the delivery of the PSHE programme. Previous themes have included; Diversity and Inclusion, Mental Health and Well-being and Internet Safety. The aim of these days is to develop the students knowledge and understanding of key themes in an active and thought-provoking way.
