Welcome to Computing!
“Sometimes it is the people no one imagines anything of who do the things that no one can imagine”
Computing is a problem-solving subject, the ultimate goal is for students to be able to design and code solutions in a variety of programming languages to solve real-world problems. Our curriculum introduces binary, and algorithms to Year 7 and 8 with an emphasis on practical work. Students attend a variety of computing-based extra-curricular clubs including coding and hacking! We believe that it is imperative that our students also require the digital skills and to know how technology works but also to understand the impact of digital technologies.
Computing provides an invaluable understanding and practical knowledge of Computer Systems in a fast changing modern environment. In a competitive market, sound Computing and ICT skills are much sought after and provide candidates with a skill set that will enable them to work in a vast number of areas.
At KS3 all students participate in projects that provide a solid and practical introduction to Computing and Computer Science. We investigate what computer systems are, how they work and what their role is in today’s world. The work ensures students understand the importance of appropriate and safe use of digital technology.
Students learn how to plan, develop, code and test programs using a range of programming techniques and coding languages. Projects range from games design with Scratch to creating basic ‘artificial intelligence’ with high level languages such as Python. In addition students learn about the Online World, the nature of the internet and WWW, designing and creating websites using HTML and CSS.
Over the course of a year, students will undertake 5-6 projects which build a broad range of skills and knowledge, culminating in an end of year team project where they get the chance to demonstrate and use what they have learnt to develop a solution to a real life challenge.
“Education is not the learning of facts but the training of the mind to think.”
